Dr Prabakar Thyagarajan is a physician who trained at CMC Vellore, finishing his MBBS in 1986, and subsequently worked at the Christian Mission Hospital in Madurai in Internal Mediine. He comes from the renowned PTR family (also known as the P.T.Rajan family) in Madurai.

In 1990, Dr. Thyagarajan left for the UK to specailize in Psychiatry, and completed the M.R.C.Psych degree in 1994. He subsequently went to America, and retrained, obtaining the American psychiatric degree A.B.Psych. He worked for over 13 years on a locked inpatient unit at Bayridge Hospital in Lynn, Massachusetts, as well as at the Day Hospital Program there. He also taught medical students from the Boston University Medical School.

His special interests lie in treating Treatment Resistant Depression, and Treatment Resistant Schizophrenia. He also specializes in treating the psychiatric components of medical illnesses such as Heart Disease, Strokes, Cancer, and Perimenstrual illnesses. He is an expert in Pyschotherapy or Counseling, both for individuals, and families.

In 1998, Dr. Thyagarajan received an award for excellence in patient care at the hospital system where he worked in Massachusetts. In 2008, he was invited by the Massachusetts General Hospital (the hospital attached to Harvard Medical School) to join their faculty. He made a decision, instead, to return to India in January 2010, to spend the rest of his professional life serving the people of India. He works mornings at the main Apollo Hospital on Greams Road, and spends afternoons treating patients at Billroth Hospital at R. A. Puram.
